LITERACY WEEK: Lights, Camera, Action, Read!
On Friday, 5/30, we officially kicked off our Read-A-Thon & Literacy Week themed, Lights, Camera, Action, Read! Students are encouraged to read, read, read! Our goal is to read over 275,000 minutes! All students, K-5th Grade, are asked to record their reading minutes each day for 2 weeks. It’s as EASY as that! Just record your daily 20/30 minutes of homework reading PLUS any additional reading minutes, on the Read-a-Thon Log sheets that went home in the Thursday folder. Turn in week 1 on Friday, June 6th and week 2 on Friday June 13th. The class in each grade with the highest number of reading minutes at the end will become official Ladera Read-a-Thon “Stars” and have an Award Winning Breakfast Party! Help us reach the school goal and win a CHALK Party Recess for every grade level!
Bookmarks submissions for the contest were due on 5/30. Bookmarks will be sold for .50 cents with all proceeds going to the charity First Book.
The annual Literacy Week Charity Event, Coins for Kids, kicked off as well! Our selected charity this year is called First Book. This organization raises funds to provide books to needy children. All pocket change is welcome! Any amount is appreciated! Each classroom will have a jar for donations.
On Wednesday, 6/4, we will have a special assembly for Literacy Week. A real, live, published author! Adam Glendon Sidwell, author of the Evertaster series, will be here to meet with our students. He will autograph his books, which will be pre-sold. Check your child’s Thursday folder for more information on purchasing a book for the event (due June 3rd).
Friday, June 6th is PJ day! We will celebrate reading in our comfiest PJs all day!
